Paolla and Masoud Engagement session, Arlington, VA

I met up with Paolla and Masoud on a gorgeous Saturday morning in Old Town Alexandria. Old Town is a beautiful historic district with many interesting and dynamic backdrops. I had an absolutely fantastic time working with this couple who had undeniable chemistry along with a twist of goofiness. I was more than impressed when Paolla managed to give Masoud a piggy-back ride: some people have trouble walking in high heels, some along cobble stone streets and most while carrying the load of a grown man, but Paolla did it all. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to capture all of this positive, fun-loving energy and I look forward to shooting their wedding which I have no doubt will be an absolute blast.

Edwards Wedding – Woodend Sanctuary, Chevy Chase, MD

Rachel and Jarett were married at the Woodend sanctuary in Chevy Chase, Maryland. They couldn’t have asked for better weather; the sky was clear and there was a refreshing breeze which conveniently took care of any potential mosquitoes. (When you are the photographer and have both hands around a camera, trust me, this is a very important detail).  The ceremony took place down a long path in a flattened grove surrounded by beautiful tall trees; it was quite the impressive backdrop. A cocktail hour followed and of course we had to slip in a few photos of Rachel and her long time friends before we lost the light. The evening’s dinner was exceptional and for that I have Alexandra (the fantastic coordinator) to thank. There was beautiful sincerity in each speech that followed; each was unique thoughtful and touching and all of them carried enough humor to keep everyone laughing. It was clear through what their friends had to say as well as what they had to say to one another that Rachel and Jarett are truly wonderful together and have nothing but a positive impact on those around them.

Tai Wedding at The Inn at Little Washington

I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Catherine and Alex. This was to be a uniquely small gathering including only immediate family; six guests in total. I found the intimacy of this event similar to my own wedding and I had a great appreciation for the personal nature of this union. I joined the bride at her childhood home in Alexandria where she was getting ready amidst friends and family. It was here that I learned of the couple’s intention to exchange ‘cereal box rings’; apparently they had not found the right rings and so they decided on a couple of fantastic ‘place-holders’. We soon headed to The Inn at Little Washington where the ceremony was to take place. This was the first time I had been to this location and I was completely blown way; it out did my every expectation. The town was quaint, beautiful and seemingly untouched by time.  The place was truly surreal and a wonderful site for a wedding. We reconvened at the Gamekeepers cottage and I began by taking photographs of the rich details. There was a photographic opportunity everywhere I looked. We had a wonderful time placing Catherine’s dress against the rich backdrops; the dress fit both her personality and this location seamlessly. The ceremony itself began with a musical introduction played by the bride’s Father and Brother. Catherine and Alex then exchanged their vows and their fantastic ‘cereal box’ rings; a little bat and a glow-in-the-dark ghost. We spent the next hour taking beautiful portraits and exploring the photographic potential of this incredible place. I always find a certain gratification when a couple seems to match the wedding that they have chosen for themselves. It was a pleasure shooting this wonderful, relaxed and carefree couple; I wish them all the best.

Bartley Wedding – The National Press Club, Washington, D.C

Leah and Andy were married this past August. (Yes I am behind on the blog!)  The day began at the JW Marriot in a bridal suite overlooking the Capitol in D.C, and was filled with charming moments.  For example, I was taking pictures of the gorgeous and anxious bride by the window.   Her nerves were instantly tamed when she spotted her husband-to-be in the plaza below – ‘Oh my God that’s Andy!…Aww, I can’t wait!’.

The notably handsome couple chose an excellent mix between small town and big city celebration as they said their ‘I do’s at St. Paul’s in Kensington, Maryland, and celebrated their exchange of vows in the District. We shot fun and beautiful pictures by the plaza and park in DC, the railway tracks in Kensington, and on the walk to the reception.

The day came to a close at the prestigious National Press Club where the life of the reception was a phenomenal and funky jazz band that got everybody dancing – even Grand Ma! Cheers to Leah and Andy.

Hina and Ali in Sterling, VA

I had the opportunity to photograph Hina and Ali’s wedding party. This was a unique situation because rather than a wedding this was a post marriage party with less than typical stylistic requests. The couple wanted dramatic portraits rather than simply images of romance. This alternative is always a fun challenge and allows me to push the creative potential of my shooting. I met the couple at their house in Sterling where they were preparing for the night’s activities. Hina wore the most beautifully decadent and colorful dress which immediately inspired endless possibilities. We headed to the Reston Town Center and started with dramatic images in the parking garage, taking advantage of the structural order, bare textures and cutting sunlight that came streaming in. It was all about attitude for these images and Ali was working it with his 007 sunglasses.  We moved on to take photos set against the urban backdrop and discovered our second primary set of the afternoon; a black plywood wall.  Hina’s vibrant dress in contrast with the bare wall created a striking juxtaposition and a series of wonderful images. I had a great time with this shoot; it’s always fun to photograph a couple who is willing and creative. After our afternoon in Reston we reconvened at the Cherry Blossom; an absolutely fantastic Afghan restaurant and reception hall which I discovered had recently opened in Sterling. The couple greeted their guests on a stage, accepting their good wishes and congratulations. The evening was filled with fun, laughter and really, really amazing food. I truly had a great time photographing Hina and Ali and I wish them nothing but the best.

Jacqueline and Mark engagement session, Manassas, VA

I spent a wonderful afternoon with Jacqueline and Mark in the town of Manassas. I enjoyed the urban setting which always provides versatility in textures, backdrops and set potential. We began our shooting by exploring the Manassas train station and I have to say I was impressed with the preserved sense of history that the station evoked; ideal for creating dynamic and interesting images. Jacqueline and Mark where absolutely great to work with; they never stopped smiling, laughing and just enjoying one another. I look forward to shooting their wedding next year.
