Whitehall Manor Wedding Photography – Rose Wedding

post written on 21 Sep 11 in Weddings

In the week leading up to your wedding everyone feels its their duty to give you advice on what to expect.  How to deal with an earthquake and a hurricane is normally not included!  Kristen and Andrew were at the mercy of the Weather Gods when they got married at Historic Whitehall Manor in Bluemont, Virginia.  A rare east coast earthquake shook things up early in the week and then hurricane Irene hit on the day of the wedding.  A positive attitude is almost a requirement under the circumstances and Kristen and Drew had this in abundance.  Nothing was going to slow them down from making the most of their day and having a great time with friends and family.  The bride and groom are graduates of Ithaca College and the wedding was packed with fellow IC alum.  I felt a special connection to this enthusiastic group as I am one myself.  Go Bombers!

National Museum of Women in the Arts Wedding Photography – Keljo Wedding

post written on 19 Sep 11 in Weddings

Having a wedding in Washington, D.C. offers some unique venues not available anywhere in the country.  Lindsey and Michael held their ceremony and reception at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.  Wonderful sculptures and paintings filled the building which is a work of art itself.  It combines the size and elegance of an Italian villa with the modern touches of a hip nightclub.  A second floor balcony makes for a fantastic vantage point during the ceremony.  The museum is also located within walking distance of the White House for those bold enough to walk the streets in a wedding dress.  (Which Lindsay was!)

Trump National Golf Club Wedding Photography – Leonetti Wedding

post written on 15 Sep 11 in Weddings

Chris and Laura were married at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, VA.  They had planned an outdoor wedding in front of the beautiful giant waterfall with a view of the Potomac river.  The weather had other plans however and we were forced indoors.  No problem.  The staff at Trump switched everything without a hitch.  The ballroom made for an elegant ceremony.

I have known Laura for a while and I can honestly say I have never seen her happier.  It was impossible to remove the smile from her face all day long.   She and Chris had dreamed of partying the night away with their friends.  This was accomplished by renting a bus back to the hotel where all the guests were staying.  No one had to drive.  Brilliant.  The party, oh my……..

Baltimore Wedding Photographer – The Engineers Club – Saul Wedding

post written on 03 Sep 11 in Weddings

Tammy and Ryan were married at The Engineers Club in Baltimore, a beautiful turn-of-the century mansion.  This facility has one of the most unusual architectural features I have ever seen.  There is an atrium in the middle which must of been an open air patio at one time.  If you are a bride and groom in search of a classy, elegant reception space in Baltimore, look no further.

We were lucky that the ceremony and reception were both held indoors as the temp outside was in the high 90′s.  After a wonderful and moving ceremony the reception followed highlighted by an uncle giving a speech in Russian which clearly had an emotional effect on everyone.  The evening ended with a spectacular sparkler line as the bride and groom walked to their honeymoon night hotel up the street.  Very sweet.

US Naval Academy Wedding Photography – Doran Wedding

post written on 01 Sep 11 in Weddings

I am always excited to shoot a wedding at the US Naval Academy.  (For anyone living in the D.C. area it is required for your “must see” list.)  It is a magnificent facility dripping with tradition.  Laura and Kevin’s ceremony was at the beautiful Naval Chapel and was followed by a reception at the historic Governor Calvert House in Annapolis.  We were able to create some fun and dramatic shots of the couple with the Naval Cadets marching in the background.  There were a lot of nervous moments leading up to the reception as most of Annapolis did not have power for the entire day.  With candles already burning and daylight fading fast, the staff was scrambling to set up a generator when the power came back in a nick of time.  The party that followed was a response to almost never happening as the group seemed to revel in every moment.  (Very crazy!!)  I also must mention the speech of the Father of the Bride.  It simply was the best I have ever heard in my almost 20 years in the business.  “Tears forward” is what it was called and I will never forget it.

Demko Wedding – Virginia Oaks Golf Club – Gainesville, VA

post written on 05 Aug 11 in Weddings

My clients constantly ask me about the differences between weddings in Los Angeles and Virginia.  Without hesitation I say there are many more outdoor weddings in California.  A wedding held outside enables your photographer to take a more creative approach and allows for better shots of your audience.  Twenty years from now you are going to want to see the people at your wedding more than the location.

Jacqueline and Mark were married at Virginia Oaks Golf Club in Gainesville in a beautiful outdoor setting.  I have played golf all my life and I am a big fan of weddings at golf courses.  We hopped in a golf cart after the ceremony and explored many picturesque spots.  Jaquie and Mark were comfortable and had fun as we got some exceptional shots.  The reception that followed was filled with family fun and laughter.  A great couple and a great wedding!

Melia Wedding – George Mason University – Fairfax, VA

post written on 04 Aug 11 in Weddings

George Mason University is considered by many to be an excellent school with a beautiful campus.  My neighbor’s son goes there and loves it.  I however, still hold a grudge against them for beating my beloved University of Connecticut to make the college basketball Final Four.  Some scars take a long time to heal…..  When Karen and David told me their wedding and reception were going to be held at George Mason I had to get over it.  (UConn winning their 3rd National Championship this season helped a lot!)  I have to admit, it is a very nice school.

The ceremony was held at a chapel on campus.  No matter how many times I see a 2 year old flower girl panic as she walks down the aisle I still love it!  The cuteness factor is off the charts.  After a wonderful ceremony, Karen and David showed me around the campus and we got some great shots.  (There a small statue to commemorate the Final Four appearance.  Go Mason!)

The reception was held at hotel banquet facility right on campus; The Mason Inn Hotel & Conference Center.  It was a normal, fun reception until the DJ played “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice and suddenly the groom and his brothers “got a little sideways”.  It had to be seen to be believed but the party was now cranked up and rolling.  Good times.

Johnson Wedding – Hendry House – Arlington, VA

post written on 20 Jul 11 in Weddings

Anna and Mike were married at the Hendry House at Fort Smith in Arlington.  Fort Smith was one of many forts built to protect the Capital during the Cival War.  There are some cool remaining artifacts such as a canon and fortification embankments.    I must recommend this venue to potential brides.  Although it can only handle small events (125 and under), the facility is great.  They have a many beautiful spots for an outdoor ceremony and the house is charming and surprisingly modern.  Anna and Mike made their event into a casual family reunion.  They had invited a lot of kids but certainly there was no shortage of activities.  Crochet, juggling, and football mixed with a live band playing on the porch to create one of the funniest weddings I have shot in a long time.

Flickinger Wedding – Musket Ridge Golf Club – Myersville, MD

post written on 09 Jun 11 in Weddings

Sometimes walking into a wedding is the same as walking into a 10 year High School reunion.  (In the best way.)  Arriving at Musket Ridge for Jane and Nic’s wedding I was greeted by familiar friendly faces.  I had shot Jane’s brother’s wedding the year before and sometimes a family leaves a lasting impression.  The Bartley’s are one of the most loving, caring, genuine, and accommodating familes I have come across in a long long time.  I briefly had met Nic at that same event and then spent an afternoon with he and Jane on the golf course.  I had a suspicion that he was of the same cloth if he was marrying Jane, and our time together confirmed this.   I had been looking forward to shooting the Flickinger wedding for a while and the event did not disappoint.  Jane looked amazing, Nic very GQ.  We got lucky with the weather as the rain held off and provided a wonderful thin cloud layer.  (Perfect for photography!)  The Bartleys and the Flickingers are not afraid to show their emotions and we had lots of tears, laughter, joy, and love during an exceptional wedding!
